How this tool works
Inflation silently destroys purchasing power. If your 2020 salary was $1,000 USD-equivalent and hasn't risen in real terms, your money is literally worth less — but the change is invisible without the math.
This calculator compounds official YoY CPI year by year between two dates per country, returning three key numbers: the equivalent amount in the target year, accumulated inflation as a percentage, and the multiplier factor. In countries with triple-digit inflation like Venezuela or Argentina, the gap is brutal.
Formula
Equivalent = Amount × ∏(1 + ik/100) where ik is annual inflation in each year k between source and target.
Use cases
- Negotiate a raise with hard numbers
- Estimate real value of an inheritance received years ago
- Compare your 2020 salary with today's
- Model erosion of savings in local currency
Frequently asked questions
- Where does the inflation data come from?
- Official CPI averages (national stat agencies) through 2025 plus consensus projection for 2026.
- Does official inflation reflect reality?
- In most countries yes. In Argentina and Venezuela official figures may underestimate reality by 10-30% — use the number as a floor, not ceiling.
- Does it work in reverse (2026 to 2020)?
- Yes. Set source 2026 and target 2020 to see how much an amount today was worth back then.
- Useful for investing?
- For understanding erosion, yes. For investment decisions, pair with the compound interest calculator to compare real returns vs inflation.
